Nappy and glorious, it’s Victoria the mother

-

CRADLING a baby in her arms, she looks every bit the happy mother.

Jenna Coleman returns on Sunday as a young Queen Victoria getting to grips with becoming a parent. The second series of hit ITV drama Victoria begins in 1840, about a month after the birth of the first of her nine children – also named Victoria – with Prince Albert.

Miss Coleman, 31, says the Queen had an ambivalent attitude to children. ‘In her diaries she calls getting pregnant being “caught”, but her maternal instinct is strong and she writes end- lessly about Victoria, and about how funny and delightful she is,’ she said.

Victoria creator Daisy Goodwin described Miss Coleman and her offscreen boyfriend Tom Hughes, 31, who plays a young Albert, as ‘utterly convincing’ in their portrayals.
