Irish eyes that told me this is true love

-

BACK in January 1955, I was having a quiet drink in a Bradford pub. A mate came in and said: ‘Come into the dance, Eric. There are some Irish girls, they’re all nice and have lovely sparkling eyes.’ A voice inside my head was saying that one of those girls was for me. I put my beer glass on the table and stood up, but the voice spoke again and said: ‘One of those girls is for you; she’ll be there when you need her.’ I stayed a while longer, then headed for the dance hall, sat down, turned to my left and looked into what, I learned, even the other Irish girls called ‘traffic light eyes’. I knew she was for me — just knew. There were no doubts whatsoever in my mind. This month we have celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary — a marriage that cost us just five quid at the local register office.
