Mower insurance threat
OWNERS of quad bikes, golf buggies and motorised lawnmowers and other vehicles on private land could end up being forced to take out third party insurance following a ruling by the European Court of Justice.
It said that compensation for injuries suffered by a Slovenian farm worker by a tractor while on private land should have been covered by compulsory motor insurance. UK insurance organisations are seeking clarification because motor insurance is currently compulsory for vehicles on public roads, but not private land.
They say if the European Commission fails to address the issue, Britain’s Government would need to change domestic law and extend the scope of compulsory insurance, which was ‘unworkable’ and would lead to additional costs.
