KNACKERED MOTHERS’ WINE CLUB

- BY HELEN McGINN

BEST BUYS

Journey’s End Honeycomb Chardonnay 2016, £8 (usually £10), Marks & Spencer FROM South Africa’s Stellenbosch region, this is a supersmart Chardonnay full of ripe fruit, nuts and, yes, a touch of honey. If you prefer light, delicate white wines this is probably not for you. But if you like lots of flavour in your glass, you must give this a try.

WHITE WINE

Majestic Loves Gruner Veltliner 2016, £5.99 (mix six price), Majestic THE Gruner Veltliner grape is mostly found in Austria but tends to come with a slightly bigger price tag than this one from Hungary.

If you don’t know the grape, this is a great way to put that right. Full of ripe red apple flavours together with a twist of citrus fruit, it’s one of those wines you really should have in your fridge door. At all times. FOOD PAIRING: Chicken and avocado salad

RED WINE

Tesco Finest Aglianico 2015, £9, Tesco SHOP around in the Tesco Finest range and you can unearth some absolute gems. This one comes from one of the best producers in the Campania region in Southern Italy and is made from the brooding Aglianico grape.

Don’t expect subtle flavours; this is rich, chocolatey and definitely needs food. Fantastic stuff. FOOD PAIRING: Steak and chips.

SPARKLING WINE

Les Dauphins Blanc de Blancs NV, £12.99, Waitrose WITH its standout label, this is hard to miss on the shelf. But what’s inside is far from garish.

It’s a well-made sparkling wine from the Rhone, where warmer weather produces ripe grapes. This, in turn, makes a sparkling wine with lots of ripe fruit flavours together with a touch of lemon biscuits.

Made in the same way as prosecco but tastes more like champagne. FOOD PAIRING: Cashew nuts.
