YOU could make a career out of writing web content and be in demand.

Companies are desperate to hire digital content designers and are paying well too.

Ann Swain, chief executive of the Associatio­n of Profession­al Staffing Companies, says: ‘Permanent placements in the digital content design sector increased by 12 pc in the last year.

‘Salaries rose by an average of 2 pc with some firms offering to 5 pc to attract talent.’

Ian Arnison-Phillips is a digital content designer, writing content to complement website design.

‘After a degree in English and creative writing I got a job in a digital agency in Manchester and have worked for several since,’ he says.

‘I like the variety. You can be writing for the public sector one day and blogging about Tenerife the next.’

He advises others seeking a career in content design: ‘In the first two or three years concentrat­e on building a portfolio of projects to earn yourself a reputation in the industry.’

Liz Whitefield, director at agency Hippo Digital, says: ‘We look for candidates able to work in a team.’

Demand for content designers is increasing. Jonathan Sanderson, managing director at IT recruitmen­t company Corecom Consulting, says: ‘Content design is suffering a lack of candidates with skills and qualificat­ions.’

Pay for content designers starts at £25,500 and can reach £53,750 with experience.
