School for winners
THERE seems little difference between the approach of grammar schools and Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre, where 190 pupils won places at top universities (Mail).
Grammar schools were selective, insisted on good attendance, discipline and school uniforms, just like Newham. The majority of grammar pupils came from deprived areas and were turned into high achievers by the school’s work ethic.
My old grammar sent 90 per cent of its pupils to university in the days when only 10 per cent of applicants were successful.
