Helen’s right, don’t trust wrinkle creams
SHE raised eyebrows when she suggested anti- ageing skin creams might be useless – especially since she’s the face of a L’Oreal anti-ageing serum.
But Dame Helen Mirren is ‘probably right’ about the products, according to a British academic.
The actress, 72, who is the face of L’Oreal’s £14.99 Age Perfect Essence, said to Campaign magazine this month: ‘I know when I put my moisturiser on it probably does f*** all, but it just makes me feel better.’
Now, Sheila MacNeil, professor of tissue engineering at Sheffield University, has said there is ‘a lot of marketing instead of science’ with creams and that eating healthily, not smoking and avoiding the sun is far better for keeping youthful skin.
Writing on website The Conversation, she said some creams help a little by ‘providing a barrier against the sun’, but ‘will not prevent the skin looking older’. But Dr Chris Flower, of the Cosmetic Toiletry and Perfumery Association, insisted consumers can trust creams to do what they claim because ‘the law requires cosmetics companies to be able to substantiate claims with robust data’.
