Do we need a law to target dangerous cyclists?

-

CYCLIST Charlie Alliston, who crashed into mother-of-two Kim Briggs, has been cleared of manslaughter, but found guilty of causing bodily harm by ‘wanton or furious driving’. Many cyclists have been killed by ‘wanton and furious’ drivers. Alliston’s track bike did not have brakes and, therefore, should not have been used on the road. Four of my cyclist friends were killed by a car with defective tyres, which should not have been on the road. The driver was fined £180 because the magistrates decided the tyres did not cause the crash.

ALL cyclists should pay an annual road tax of £50, plus have thirdparty insurance. A bicycle is a means of transport, so why should it be exempt from regulations covering other vehicles?

C. T. STANTON, Cwmbran, Gwent.

I AGREE wholeheartedly with Matt Briggs, the husband of the woman killed after a collision with a cyclist riding a bike without brakes. Death by dangerous cycling should be an offence with a custodial sentence. Every day I see cyclists weaving in and out of traffic, ignoring road signs. It would only be a small minority of cyclists who would be affected by such changes. MICHAEL HARVEY, Portishead, Bristol.
