Suffragette gran’s statue gets my vote
WHETHER or not the suffragettes were instrumental in gaining women the right to vote (Letters), I am proud that a statue of my great-grandmother, Alice Hawkins (left), will be gracing Leicester market place. Standing 12ft high on its plinth, it will be the first statue of a suffragette unveiled in the UK in 2018 to coincide with the centenary of women gaining the vote. My mum’s abiding memory of her granny is being told: ‘You must use your vote, we suffered for it.’ Those words from all those years ago are as true today.
