Exams are failing us

I DON’T want to diminish the accomplish­ments of the students who achieved a clean sweep of top results in their GCSes, but are exams really necessary? They do not prepare our young people for life or work.

I can’t think of any job where you have to write against the clock about the characters in romeo And Juliet or solve quadratic equations.

We need to think seriously about the qualificat­ions that will be most useful to our future adults, and if this means phasing out GCSes, they will not be missed.
