NEW WORDS FOR OLD Twitter used to be a sound Made only by the birds, But now on my computer It’s a way of spreading words. That tiny furry creature That scurries round the house, Now is not the only thing That people call a mouse. The clever little spider Weaves a web of pretty lace But now we know the world wide web, Spans countries, time and space. A golden handshake always meant A thank you, that felt nice, But now a handshake just connects Computer and device. Virol was that toffee stuff Mum gave to us with pride. Now going viral simply means That news has gone worldwide. Tablets are those tiny things We swallow when we’re ill, But with a modern tablet You can browse the web at will. We think it’s modern jargon But we older people know That all those words they’re using Really stem from long ago. Greta Ward, Hayling Island, Hants.
