65,000 Germans flee RAF bomb

-

GERMANY carried out its largest evacuation since the Second World War yesterday after an unexploded RAF bomb was found on a building site.

Around 65,000 people were moved to safety while bomb disposal experts began a 12-hour operation to defuse the 1. -ton ‘Blockbuster’ in Frankfurt.

The mile-wide exclusion zone included 20 retirement homes, an opera house, and the country’s central bank where half its gold reserves are stored.

Two hospitals transferred patients and infants to other medical centres after the HC 000 bomb, nicknamed for its ability to wipe out whole streets, was found last Tuesday.

Police checked all houses in the evacuation zone with heat-detection equipment to make sure everyone had left.
