Fury as Sammy the seal is hit with 2ft spear

RESIDENTS in a seaside town were horrified when a seal which lives in the harbour was spotted with a 2ft-long spear in its back.

The female, nicknamed Sammy, is a well-known sight in Brixham, Devon.

It is not known if Sammy was shot intentionally, but locals fears a hunter could be targeting seals in the area.

Sammy is still eating and ‘full of energy’, and is not believed to be seriously injured.

Resident Jackie Cromer wrote on Facebook: ‘I am absolutely disgusted that someone has speared one of the seals in Fishcombe Cove. Going to check on her again tomorrow. But they can’t get near her as she keeps diving.’

Chris Elliott added: ‘Let’s hope it was an accident. The diver should come forward – he knows he’s missing a harpoon if the gun fired accidentally.’
