SHILTON’S BEST OF ALL-TIME
1 LEV YASHIN
Legendary Russian had great presence and agility. Yashin (below) wore all black which made him look unbeatable in the 1950s and 60s.
2 GORDON BANKS
Stoke City icon was able to make great saves when needed — most notably for England against Pele in the 1970 World Cup — but usually didn’t have to because of his positioning.
3 GIANLUIGI BUFFON
Superb technique and still very solid for Italy and Juventus. The length of his great career says it all.
4 DINO ZOFF
Captained Italy to World Cup glory in 1982. Organised his defence and rarely made mistakes.
5 MANUEL NEUER
Strong in stature and confidence for both Germany and Bayern. Can make matchwinning saves and also acts as a sweeper.
6 DAVID SEAMAN
Known as ‘Safe Hands’ for a reason. A class act for club and country.
PETER SCHMEICHEL
The great Dane had a unique style. Very dominant and not afraid to take responsibility. Gave confidence to his defence.
8 SEPP MAIER
World Cup winner for Germany who wore the biggest gloves l have seen! Very good and solid keeper.
9 PAT JENNINGS
Great for Northern Ireland, Spurs and Arsenal. Always calm and with a unique style.
10 PETER BONETTI
One of my boyhood heroes. He had fantastic agility and was unfairly remembered for England’s World Cup quarterfinal loss to West Germany in 1970, but he had a brilliant 20-year Chelsea career making some incredible saves.
