Is this ‘Lego brick’ extension the ugliest building in Britain?
LIKENED to Lego bricks, this modern extension to a Victorian villa is up for a major architectural award – as Britain’s ugliest building.
The structure, built to house a kitchen, garage and living area for the four-storey house, has made the shortlist for the annual Carbuncle Cup – a prize awarded by Building Design magazine to the most unattractive building completed in the past year.
The spartan white stone extension is a startling contrast to the classic features of the 19th century brick house it is attached to in Malvern, Worcestershire.
Building Design said it was ‘the visual equivalent of nails being dragged over a blackboard’, and locals were appalled when it was erected in July by homeowner Edward Elgar, 49, descendant of composer Sir Edward Elgar.
He and his wife, Charlotte, declined to comment yesterday, as did Vivid Architects, the firm that designed the building.
