Brexit poker

-

SHOULD the intransigent Michel Barnier, the EU Brexit negotiator, come to his senses and display a modicum of statesmanship, his talks with David Davis, the Brexit Secretary, could be concluded with a mutually beneficial agreement.

But Mr Barnier gives the impression of being a flustered poker player who holds a weak hand and has to resort to bluff and bluster in an attempt to intimidate his opponent into chucking in his hand.

Unfortunately for him, unlike David Cameron and his ilk, Davis is not a product of the old-school, privileged class. His alma mater was the school of hard knocks from which, through hard work and ability, he emerged with strength of character and principled patriotism.

RICHARD REID, Leicester. EC PRESIDENT Jean- Claude Juncker must accept responsibility for Brexit. If he had allowed David Cameron even just a few concessions, then the Referendum would, unfortunately, have resulted in a decision to stay in the EU. So, thank you very much, Mr Juncker. ALEXANDER YOUNGSON,

Scarborough, N. Yorks. WHY do the Eurocrats want to punish us for leaving? Surely, if the EU is such a wonderful and beneficial organisation, leaving would be punishment enough.

KEITH BIRD, Messing, Essex.
