IT WAS a lovely letter by David K. Whalley regarding Sir Stanley Matthews (Peterborough). I’m almost 76 and a season ticket holder with Stoke City. I saw Sir Stan before he left for Blackpool in 1947 and on his return in 1961. Yes, at the time he was the greatest footballer the world had ever seen, but I have to say the sheer quality, speed, pace and fitness of today’s players takes a bit of beating. I get just as much pleasure watching my team battling away in the Premier League today on superb pitches, not on the mud heaps and frozen ones from a long time ago, as I did watching Stan. I was with our fans behind the goal at West Brom recently. I can only say to Mr Whalley, come and watch it. But the great man would have caused even more havoc in today’s conditions. Roger M.
