No to opting out
I GAVE my left kidney in order to share my good health with a gravely sick person. My DNA was matched with a stranger on the waiting list.
In July 2013, it took five hours to remove my kidney and just an hour to transplant it into the recipient.
At the post-op check-up two weeks later, I was delighted to be handed an anonymous thank-you card from the person who had received it.
Every anniversary, knowing she or he is remembering the date, too, I drink a toast to my erstwhile kidney.
Nevertheless, if England follows Wales in adopting an opt-out system on organ donation, I shall be among the first to opt out in protest.
No one has a human right to anyone else’s organs and presumed consent is a contradiction in terms.
If people support the idea of organ donation, but never get round to joining the register, the problem that needs addressing is apathy.
