MALAN looks the safest bet of the three batsmen for an Ashes place after scoring 65 at Edgbaston and a gritty 61 in five hours as England fought back in their second innings at Headingley. But the Middlesex batsman needed luck, too. Now if he can go on to convert a fifty into a Test hundred he will arrive in Australia with a spring in his step.
