I’m no robot, says May, as she bowls over Lord’s with a batch of brownies

- By Jack Doyle Executive Political Editor

SHE may have been accused of being somewhat robotic, but yesterday Theresa May charmed the cricket fraternity with the help of a batch of homemade brownies.

The Prime Minister was clearly enjoying herself when she went to the Test match at Lord’s and met the Test Match Special commentary team – renowed for their love of cake.

Mrs May appeared on the BBC programme during lunch in the match between England and the West Indies.

She spoke of her affection for cricket and former player Geoffrey Boycott and revealed her frustration at being branded ‘robotic’.

She told the BBC’s cricket correspondent, Jonathan Agnew, she would like to have met more voters during the general election campaign.

‘I get frustrated that people used the term “robotic” about me during that campaign,’ she said. ‘I don’t think I’m in the least robotic, what I really enjoy is getting out there, talking to people, hearing from them, understanding what the issues are for them.’

A tradition on the programme is that guests take cake. Mrs May took a batch of chocolate brownies which she baked herfrey self, using a recipe from food writer and chef Nigel Slater.

She said the brownies were ‘made with my own fair hands’ – prompting presenter Jonathan Agnew to joke that she had ‘ got your priorities right’ in spending her time cooking for the TMS team rather than running the country.

But she replied: ‘I’m a woman, I can multi-task and do them both at the same time.’

Mrs May said that the last time she paid a visit to the programme, she gave the brownies to Boycott and did not know whether he shared them with his fellow presenters.

‘I have made brownies for TMS before, once when Geof- Boycott was invited,’ she said.

‘I brought some brownies up. I handed them to Geoffrey but I don’t know whether they ever made it into the TMS box.’

She added: ‘All I will say is that Geoffrey Boycott’s still got my Tupperware.’

Mrs May named Boycott as her favourite cricketer because of ‘ the fact that he stuck in there and just got on with the job’, but admitted she never saw him play live.

She also revealed she had never played cricket seriously herself, only taking part in French cricket sessions in the garden as a girl.
