Actor-politician who won’t leave the stage

-

WHAT a piece of work is Tony Blair. as prime minister, he threw open the UK’s borders to all-comers, defying the public’s wishes. now he has the audacity to pose as a champion of rigorous border controls.

In a dramatic about-turn – dizzying even by his standards of cynical opportunism – he tells us that Leave voters’ concerns over the pressures of mass immigration on public services, wages and cultural integration ‘cannot be ignored’.

The supreme irony is that Mr Blair’s motive for insisting the people’s will should be respected is… wait for it… to overturn the will of the people!

Politicians need only tighten migration rules, he says, and they can forget the referendum result and keep us in the eU.

Leave aside that Brussels has already flatly rejected the sort of border controls he proposes. Indeed, when david Cameron begged for similar concessions, the eurocrats sent him away with nothing.

In the highly unlikely event that they change their minds, isn’t it all too clear that this would be only to ensnare us into remaining a member, before pressing on with forcing us into ‘ever closer union’?

Mr Blair is playing Jean-Claude Juncker’s game, not Britain’s.

Indeed, this slippery actor-politician has shown his contempt for the public once too often. we’re leaving the eU – and he, like the saboteurs seeking to derail the Brexit Bill, must get over it.
