Tudors’ star Rhys Meyers back on booze after wife loses baby

- By Fionn Hargreaves

JONATHAN Rhys Meyers’s wife has revealed the actor has relapsed in his battle with alcoholism after the miscarriage of their second child.

Mara Lane said her husband had taken the news ‘particularly’ badly and began drinking again to help deal with their loss.

Her candid message was posted on social media after pictures emerged of the Tudors star being led away by security at Dublin airport on Friday as he attempted to board a flight to Vancouver, Canada.

According to witnesses, Rhys Meyers, 40, was staggering and appeared to be drunk. One said: ‘ He was staggering around for a good while. He wasn’t causing any hassle with anyone, he just seemed to be really intoxicated. It was very sad to see him like this.’

Miss Lane, an American actress and producer who married Rhys Meyers last year, wrote: ‘ With much sadness, we open our hearts to share that J and I lost our second child, who was baking in the oven.

‘Child was very, very much wanted (right now especially by J, so he took the news particularly not so well) and we are still working with coping skills over here... when life throws us curve balls such as these.

‘My husband is an Irishman who battles alcoholism and depression and drank between jobs to try to cope with the sadness of this news.

‘I feel that whomever took photos of my husband was slightly in the wrong and was concerned for the wrong reasons but ... it’s OK. It’s OK.’

Miss Lane, who has a young son Wolf with Rhys Meyers, said he was now ‘safe and with his sober living companion and bodyguard’ and set to enter rehab ‘closer to home since he was denied hospital help twice in Ireland because of a twomonth wait period’.

The actor has battled alcoholism for more than a decade and first checked in to rehab clinic Promises in Malibu, California, in 2005.

The Bend It Like Beckham actor returned in 2007 after the death of his mother. He was also arrested at Dublin airport in November 2007 and charged with public drunkenness and breach of the peace.

The actor then returned to rehab in February 2009 but was held by French police four months later when he was accused of assaulting employees at Charles de Gaulle airport while drunk. He was fined 1,000 euros by a French court for also threatening to kill three police officers.
