THE Food Minister plans an extension of communal feeding this autumn. And he wants communal feeding to continue when the war is over. His objective is better and cheaper meals for all, elimination of waste and a saving of work for housewives. He thinks that once they get used to it, people will like feeding together.

A gREAT cheer which must have been heard in Spain went up today as gibraltar heard her referendum result. The overwhelming verdict: 12,138 opted to continue under British sovereignty, while only 44 chose Spain. More than 95 per cent of the electorate turned out to vote.

JONNY BUCKlAND, 40. Coldplay’s lead guitarist met his bandmates at University College london, where he read maths. He and Chris Martin (pictured near right with him) were the first to collaborate in a band called Pectoralz. Of his guitar skills, Buckland has said: ‘I’m not technically very good.’ Whatever skills he may feel he lacks, his net worth is now £57 million. JUlIE COvINgTON, 71. The actress was the first to sing Evita’s Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, on an album of the musical in 1976. Offered the lead role in the stage production, she declined — which led to Elaine Paige being cast. Julie later expressed some regret at this decision, but said she didn’t like Eva Peron so had preferred to turn the role down.

JESSICA MITFORD (19171996). One of the noted Mitford sisters, Jessica (right) was dubbed ‘the red sheep of the family’ for her Communist views. Her sister Diana married fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley and was interred with him in Holloway Prison for most of World War II. Before their release in 1943, Jessica wrote to Winston Churchill: ‘They should be kept in jail, where they belong.’ BARRY SHEENE (1950-2003). The British playboy motorcyclist was as famous for his crashes as his wins. He won two world 500cc champioships and was nicknamed the Bionic Man after a 165mph crash in 1982, which led to his body being ‘put back together with metal plates and screws’.
