Starting school, our little miracle
HOW lovely to see the picture of Lyra Cole, who has recovered from a brain tumour and has just started school (Mail).
My granddaughter Elsie was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour in March 2015 when she was two-and-a-half.
It was a complete shock to the family. She underwent 12 hours of surgery, which was stopped abruptly when her brain started haemorrhaging.
For four days, Elsie was clinging to life on a respirator. Doctors told us she might never again be able to breathe on her own, let alone walk or talk again. But she recovered from that first operation and then underwent intensive chemotherapy, stem cell therapy and more surgery.
Elsie has just celebrated her fifth birthday and, despite the frightening warnings from the doctors, is walking and talking, and loves playing with her sister, Lily. She has just started school, a miracle we never thought would happen. JUDITH McCLUSKIE, Milton Keynes, Bucks.
