- MIKE DICKSON

her class at the age of 36 is that Hingis has only partnered Murray in two tournaments — the other was Wimbledon — and they won them both. This was her first Grand Slam with Chan. Hingis is recognised as the best doubles player on the women’s tour, and it is no wonder Murray jumped at the chance when the Swiss suggested teaming up. They plan to join up again for the Australian Open and if they need a target it should be to complete the Grand Slam of mixed doubles, in Melbourne and Paris. In the meantime, Murray will look ahead to London as he and men’s partner Bruno Soares have all but qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals at the O2 Arena in November. Britain’s Alfie Hewett last night lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the final of the US Open wheelchair singles to Stephane Houdet of France. On Saturday, Hewett and fellow Brit Gordon Reid won the doubles event.

?? ?? One down: Hingis hugs Murray after the first of her two triumphs ONCE incredibly hyped, Martina Hingis could arguably now be described as quietly underrated. She accompanied Jamie Murray to win Saturday’s US Open mixed doubles final, and last night she added to it with the women’s doubles title. Partnering Taipei’s Latisha Chan, Hingis beat the Czech pair of Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-2. Those twin triumphs took her overall tally of Grand Slam titles to 25.
