At present, the only ‘space tourism’ flights cost £15million, which will buy you a trip to the Internatio­nal Space Station with the Russians.

Steve Bennett’s firm Starchaser claims that in ten years it will be able to get this cost down to around £10,000.

While Skybolt 2 was powered by kerosene, previous rockets have used sugar and weedkiller.

The latest craft is 27ft tall and made of carbon fibre and is designed to fly more than 62 miles to edge of space.

His next rocket, Nova 2, is 39 ft and designed to carry a person and is due to launch in 18 months.
