Vegetarians may be more prone to the winter blues
VegeTAriANS are more likely to develop the winter blues than meat-eaters, say dutch researchers.
A team from the university of groningen found that vegetarians in Finland were four times more likely to have seasonal affective disorder (SAd) than meat-eaters.
in the Netherlands, vegetarians had three times the risk. This may be linked to lower intakes of vitamin B12, suggest the researchers in the journal Neuropsychobiology.
The vitamin is found in animal products, and plays a role in the production of brain chemicals that affect our mood.
SAd causes a low mood that begins in the autumn and improves in the spring and summer.
