We’re history, says Rodgers
BRENDAN Rodgers says Celtic are unlikely to be champions of Europe again — but he has no problem with Paris SaintGermain’s attempt to buy their way to the top prize. The French side and their new mega-million pound strikeforce of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe are in Glasgow ahead of tonight’s Group B opener. It was 50 years ago that Celtic lifted the European Cup, and Rodgers admits those days are almost certainly consigned to history, especially since qualifying will soon involve an extra round. Asked if they could ever win the Champions League, Rodgers said: ‘I very much doubt it. The game has moved on. It’s just astronomical now. We have to go through an extra phase next year and that’s to give leagues with more financial clout an extra place. The nations that don’t have that clout have to go through a harder pathway. So until it changes and we get 10 billionaires coming to Scotland, it’s what we have to do.’
