HOW THEY PLAN TO GIVE MPS FINAL SAY
PRO-REMAIN MPs yesterday tabled dozens of amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill. Key proposals include:
ALLOWING MPs to determine the length of the Brexit transition. This would tie Theresa May’s hands and enable MPs to keep the UK in the single market forever. DANGER RATING 5/5
GIVING MPs a veto on the final Brexit deal. Some government insiders point out they have already offered MPs a vote. But any move that could force the Prime Minister back to the negotiating table would severely weaken her position with Brussels. DANGER RATING 4/5
Forcing the Government to hold a second referendum on Brexit before leaving the EU. The move would create chaos and weaken the UK’s negotiating position, but appears to have little parliamentary support. DANGER RATING 3/5.
Putting the Charter of Fundamental Rights into British law. Ministers want to avoid this and point out that the charter, which includes the right to strike, was never meant to be in British law. DANGER RATING 3/5
Setting up a committee to ensure that key changes made by the legislation are fully considered by parliament rather than just pushed through by ministers. Government insists powers are not excessive but is likely to concede. DANGER RATING 2/5
