TENNIS champion Serena Williams has shared the first images of her newborn daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr with fans.

The baby girl was born on September 1 but until now nothing has been known about her.

Miss Williams, 35, who had to spend nearly a week in a florida hospital after the birth, said only: ‘We had a lot of complications’.

She and her fiance, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, presented their firstborn to the world on social media.

Yesterday the 23-time grand Slam winner posted a series of photos and videos to Instagram that chart Alexis’s journey into the world, starting with a clip of the ultrasound.

In one picture, Miss Williams cuddles her baby – who has quite a head of hair – with a caption reading: ‘ Meet Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. You have to check out link in bio for her amazing journey.’

She did not divulge what complications had occurred but the baby was born weighing a healthy 6lb 14oz.

Miss Williams joked that her daughter, who has been named after her fiance, has already won a grand Slam title after the tennis superstar won the Australian Open final in January while eight weeks pregnant. One video shows her walking past flashing cameras carrying her trophy. The caption says: ‘no one knows I’m eight weeks pregnant.’ She then kisses the trophy and says: ‘There’s my baby.’

The montage ends with a clip of the baby and Miss Williams explains: ‘So we are leaving the hospital after six or seven days. It’s been a long time – but we had a lot of complications – but look what we got! We got a baby girl.’ Miss Williams’s pregnancy, which had been unexpected, came with its own health challenges.

In 2011, she suffered bilateral pulmonary embolisms following foot surgery.

Carrying a child increases the risk of blood clots, and she had to inject herself with anticoagulants every day during her pregnancy to try and reduce the risk. The new mother has no plans to retire from tennis, previously revealing her ‘outrageous plan’ to defend the Australian Open title next year – only months after giving birth. She said: ‘I used to think I’d want to retire when I have kids, but no.

‘I’m definitely coming back. If anything, this pregnancy has given me a new power.’
