For 18 years I’ve held your hand, I’ve been there by your side. From the first cry that you ever gave I’ve always been your guide. I’ve been there for you, thick and thin, In good times and in bad, And now I know it’s ending, I can’t help but feel sad. For now you have let go my hand To go forward on your own, To carve your path upon this earth To make your way alone. And I am left here standing still, Not part of what’s ahead. While you move on, I just observe, Your path I cannot tread. It’s like standing on a mountain top, Just watching from afar, While someone that I love so much Goes reaching for her star. I cannot touch, she cannot hear, My time as guide has gone. My child has grown and out-grown me, Left here, while she moves on. Hilary Lonsdale, Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire.
