Follow-up
LONG ago, like Mary Gilbert (peterborough), I was a learner driver. One day, with my husband beside me, I was driving along princes Street in Edinburgh and signalled to turn up The Mound.
A police sergeant directing traffic raised his white gloved hand to halt us. To my mortification, I stalled the engine.
He clasped his hands together, raised his eyes heavenward and then waved me on.
His prayers were answered and he grinned as I drove off.
