Never forget

-

I WILL be visiting the Netherlands this weekend for the annual commemoration of the battle of Arnhem, a bridge too far.

Ever since the end of the war, each grave at the Airborne Cemetery is attended on the Sunday by a schoolchild bearing flowers. On the 70th anniversary, some of the children from 1946 attended.

Arnhem weekend is special to the local people and, indeed, the Netherlands.

My abiding memory of my first visit was seeing two children present a pair of veterans with a posy of flowers saying: ‘Thank you for all you did for us.’ They will never forget; neither should we. ALAN STACKMAN, Calne, Wilts.
