Unions call off Birmingham binmen strike

THE Birmingham bin strike was suspended yesterday after Unite union leaders won a High Court battle over city council redundancy notices.

Mr Justice Fraser granted an interim injunction until November on the fight over the council’s plans to get rid of more than 100 binmen.

The hearing in London on Wednesday centred on former council leader John Clancy after he reneged on a deal to keep workers’ jobs.

Unite said the judgment was a ‘huge relief’ for binmen, who have been on strike since June 30, leaving rubbish to pile up to 3ft high.
