VISITING THE PAST

The brochures spoke of Edwardian splendour, Royalty visited (typical weekender), We went and the brochures gave false information, The town had gone down in our estimation. The Grand Hotel was long past its best, The dowdy brocade matched the carpet and guest, An old village hall, charmingly called ‘rooms’, With closed public toilets, a new store place for brooms. We parked the car and paid a large fee, Walking down Station Road hoping to see, The design of the lovely Edwardian station, Alas, it was gone, long before our vacation. Maybe a show at the regency theatre, Could be professional or even amateur, It may contain old play lists or wonderful frescos, It contained baked beans ’cos it now was a Tesco’s. The Post Office is now a backstreet Post Shop, Like everything else it was given the chop, Perhaps we could find a solicitor hack, And get him to claim our parking fee back. P. Scrivener, Westoning, Beds.
