Latin snowflakes

CLASSICS lecturer Peter Jones has been branded sexist by a tutor at a U.S. university — in an attempt to shield ‘ snowflake’ students from offence — for including stories of the rape of Lucretia and the three naked goddesses in the latest edition of his textbook, Reading Latin (Mail).

It took me back to my grammar school days in Liverpool when, as a 15-yearold, I was studying for my Latin O-level.

The schoolboy edition of Virgil’s The Aeneid had been abridged, missing out all aspects of a sexual nature. However, our Latin master decided we were old enough to be told the full tales. We didn’t complain.
