Confusion over what happened to his body
THE fate of Ian Brady’s body remained a mystery last night.
It is unclear whether his remains have been cremated or are still in a hospital mortuary.
Brady’s body was kept at a secret location under armed police guard immediately after his death in an attempt to protect it from ghouls and trophy hunters.
It was released by coroner Christopher Sumner to Brady’s solicitor, Robin Makin, three days later – but only after the coroner received assurances that the ashes would not be scattered on Saddleworth Moor where the killer’s victims were buried.
At the time, Mr Makin said there was ‘no likelihood’ of that happening. Funeral directors and crematoriums in Liverpool and Glasgow, where Brady was born and had asked for his ashes to be scattered, refused to handle his remains.
And reports several weeks later suggested that his body was being kept in a so- called ‘ monster morgue’, at a hospital in the North West of England, alongside those of Manchester Arena suicide bomber Salman Abedi.
No details of what has happened to Brady’s remains were revealed at yesterday’s inquest and Mr Makin has repeatedly refused to answer questions about their disposal. He failed to return calls for comment last night.
Brady’s accomplice Myra Hindley was cremated in secret after she died from cancer aged 60 in 2002.
