Are middle-lane road hogs the bane of the roads?

-

HOW rude of a lorry driver to flash a driver travelling at 45 mph in a 50 mph zone for motorway road works (Letters). It is not ‘the rules of the road’ to drive at the speed limit; it means not to exceed that speed. On motorways, I drive in the left lane when it is not full of HGVs going slowly up a hill. Slow drivers can be irritating, but they’re not worth getting annoyed about. A little patience would go a long way.

LIZ DENTON, London SW11. IF HE was at a safe travelling distance, I am surprised that the lorry driver could lip-read what the driver in front was saying about him flashing his lights as a request to her to move to the inside lane. You would imagine this would only be possible if he was tailgating. As an advanced driving instructor, I tell my pupils that speed limits are not targets for all vehicles to achieve on all occasions. Perhaps the lorry driver needs to read the Highway Code about flashing lights.

R. JONES, Bingham, Notts.

I AGREE with the lorry driver that too many motorists think they can sit in the middle lane, even when the inside lane is clear. If every car and lorry kept in the correct lane, there would no hold-ups.

JENNY CRANE, Leysdown, Kent. THE number of times I have been intimidated by lorry drivers is staggering, so you will never convince me that the majority are courteous.

JOHN HILL, Yardley Gobion, Northants.

I APPRECIATE that lorry drivers are working to a tight schedule and that it takes them longer to get back up to speed if they have to slow down on motorways, but this does not give them the right suddenly to flick on an indicator and immediately to start to pull out, even if a car is alongside or just starting to pass.
