Found in a car boot in Wales, the migrant who climbed in at Calais

- By Tom Payne

A BUSINESSMAN returned home from a holiday in France to find an illegal immigrant in his car boot.

Paul Edmunds, 59, believes the 22-year-old Ethiopian crept into their Nissan Navara pick-up as they waited to board the Eurotunnel shuttle in Calais.

He and wife Janet found him as they unloaded cases back home in the village of Caersws, in Powys, South Wales.

Mr Edmunds said he spotted a strange pair of trainers before the immigrant stepped out and tried to call someone on a mobile. The man didn’t speak English but was able to ask if he was in England.

Mr Edmunds added: ‘I said, “yes, well Wales actually but they play better rugby”. He made a prayer sign and smiled. I asked again where he was from and he said Africa. I’ve never seen my wife’s mouth open so wide as when she saw him step out of the boot.’

He and wife Jan had been a break in France with friends. Mr Edmunds told The Sun he believes the man got into the car when he had a nap at the Eurotunnel terminal while the rest went for a coffee.

He called 999 and the stowaway was arrested. Police later handed him over to immigration officials.

TWo Afghan stowaways are in hospital in Devon after being airlifted from an Irish Ferries sailing between Cherbourg and Dublin. The pair were suffering from the effects of hiding in a fridge for hours.
