Bin row a right mess

-

I WORk in domestic refuse collection and would like to stress that the use of CCTV cameras is not to record recycling infringements (Mail), but to provide evidence of incidents with householders and motorists where accidents, near- misses, acts of violence and threats have occurred.

The cameras are not able to see into the bins and recycling boxes. If the wrong items are put in the recycling, we report this to the depot and put a notice on the bin, box or bag.

I agree that councils can make stupid decisions. For example, an excessive number of bins and containers are provided, fines are disproportionate and refuse is often not being collected. Despite this, householders are not being asked to do anything unreasonable.

Many countries in Europe have had domestic recycling systems for many years longer than Britain, and they do not have problems like we do: they just get on and do it.

Many of those who moan about their refuse not being collected weekly run out of bin space because they are not recycling properly. People who put nappies in their recycling or polystyrene in with the garden waste shouldn’t whinge at being issued a penalty by their local authority. siMon ForrEstEr,

wem, shropshire. Why does every council have a different approach to recycling (Letters)? If there were a national standard, then a council adopting that standard would not need a recycling empire with a director, several recycling managers and an army of supporting bureaucrats.
