BORN ON THIS DAY

ETHEL ROSENBERG (1915-1953). With her husband Julius, New York-born Ethel was convicted of conspiracy to give U.S. military secrets to the russians and executed. Her younger brother, who worked on the government’s atomic bomb programme, claimed he was recruited to pass on secrets and received a reduced sentence after testifying against his sister.

SYLVIA KRISTEL (19522012). The Dutch actress (right) played the promiscuous housewife in 1974’ s Emmanuelle, four sequels and seven Tv films. The first film played in a Paris cinema for 11 years, but was not shown in full in the UK until 2007. Kristel stopped appearing nude on film in the Eighties after her son was teased at school.
