He played on some spicy pitches this summer and got found out a bit, but it does still seem to be the case that you can turn into a better player when you are out of the team. However, some sympathy is due to the selectors in that picking english batting talent is not easy. Scoring runs in county cricket is no guarantee of success at test level and hence they need to judge people on their strength of character. this selection will not please everyone, but the context is that Australia are not in outstanding shape. Like us they rely heavily on two top-order batsmen but unlike england they do not have a middle order to pull them out of trouble. they also have a wicketkeeper, Matthew Wade, who is under pressure. their bowling attack is strong but prone to injury. these teams should be quite evenly matched, sharing some similar strengths and weaknesses.
