gland take Stokes er this video nasty? Vince pick shows we’re going round in circles

- by NASSER HUSSAIN

one thing we know about James Vince going on the Ashes tour — either the selectors were wrong when they dispensed with him after last summer, having given him seven tests, or they are wrong about him now. I worry that we are going round in circles with the batting, revisiting players without being sure they have actually improved while being back in county cricket. Vince’s average of 35 this season suggests that he may not have, but he is not the only one who makes you wonder. numerous different batters have been tried in the past three or four years, and none has really grasped the opportunity. I do think Vince is a good player and Gary Ballance’s game is more suited down at no 5, but they both fall into the same category. It is quite tempting to go back to players who have been tried before, and perhaps we need to question whether they were given enough of a chance in the first place. I feel a bit for tom Westley. He played on some spicy pitches this summer and got found out a bit, but it does still seem to be the case that you can turn into a better player when you are out of the team. However, some sympathy is due to the selectors in that picking english batting talent is not easy. Scoring runs in county cricket is no guarantee of success at test level and hence they need to judge people on their strength of character. this selection will not please everyone, but the context is that Australia are not in outstanding shape. Like us they rely heavily on two top-order batsmen but unlike england they do not have a middle order to pull them out of trouble. they also have a wicketkeeper, Matthew Wade, who is under pressure. their bowling attack is strong but prone to injury. these teams should be quite evenly matched, sharing some similar strengths and weaknesses.
