‘Worst zoo’ is given licence to stay open
A ZOO described as ‘Britain’s worst’ after almost 500 animals died in less than three years is expected to stay open – despite more of its exotic exhibits falling ill.
South Lakes Safari Zoo in Cumbria was threatened with closure earlier this year after outrage at the death toll under its millionaire owner, David Gill.
But after he agreed to pass the attraction on to new management it was granted a licence to carry on operating.
Yesterday, however, it emerged that new welfare concerns had been raised after an unannounced inspection last month.
It comes after a Daily Mail investigation revealed serious failings over safety, security and animal welfare in 170 zoo inspection reports across England and Wales.
The latest report reveals that an ageing nyala – a type of antelope – which was completely blind and had been separated from its herd was showing abnormal behaviour. It was put down. Peacocks were being treated for a sexually transmitted infection. Questions were raised about the safety of visitors, particularly around the lemur enclosure.
However inspectors said ‘good progress’ had been made, describing the welfare concerns as ‘minor’ and said licensing conditions were being met.
Mr Gill – who had made his beauty queen third wife head vet – had been slammed for ‘deplorable’ welfare standards.
