I HaVe enjoyed reading the experiences of service personnel passing through goodge St transit camp, having stayed there myself for two nights in January 1954. upon arrival, we reached the bottom of the 130-step circular stairway to find that the air was being churned by some large fans and it sounded as if the underground line was above us. So the next morning, some of us decided to go out for some fresh air, even though it was January and very cold. at lunchtime we returned to goodge St as it was allinclusive! But we made a hasty exit after lunch. Someone suggested going to a football match and Highbury was the choice. arsenal were playing Norwich in the fourth round of the Fa Cup. Norwich were the underdogs, but came out 2-1 winners. mr Wenger, even all those years ago games didn’t go to plan! The next morning we were up early and on our way to Fayid, egypt, via malta. Happy days. John whiting, stroud, Glos.
