LeFT-WinG film- maker Ken Loach has accused the Tories of ‘conscious cruelty’. he cited the rise of zero-hour contracts to underline his point on the BBC’s daily Politics show. But hang on: Loach works in an industry that uses the contracts all the time.

his own trade union, equity, has launched a campaign on the very subject, Professionally Made, Professionally Paid, saying: ‘The current situation of low and no pay in many parts of our industry is very damaging. Almost half of respondents in our most recent pay survey earn less than £5,000 per year from their professional work.’
