President’s men come up trumps

- DEREK LAWRENSON

AMERICA’S polarising President Donald Trump arrived at Liberty National yesterday, just as the rampant home side were on the brink of wrapping up a remarkably one-sided edition of the Presidents Cup. So dominant were the home side, they led the Internationals by 11 points going into the 12 singles matches, and it was just a question of who would claim the winning point. Trump, who was expected to take part in the closing ceremony, was the fourth president to show up at the matches, following earlier appearances by George W Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. The bookies were certainly convinced the visitors were losers, rating them 15,000-1 to complete a comeback. Not surprisingly, the Americans lacked intensity with the job almost done, but they got there easily enough, with impressive rookie Daniel Berger beating Si Woo Kim to see them over the line. Golf Channel pundit Brandel Chamblee said the American display in the foursomes and fourballs was so good it bore comparison with tennis great Steffi Graff in her prime and Tiger Woods in his pomp. The plaudits were understandable but it should be said their opponents delivered perhaps the poorest team display on record, only showing up yesterday when it was far too late.
