Free market fightback

-

THIS paper has had its share of disagreements with Chancellor Philip Hammond, not least because of his exasperating lack of urgency over Brexit.

But his searing attack yesterday on ‘dinosaur’ Jeremy Corbyn’s brand of ruinous 1970s socialism was just what the party – and the country – needed to hear.

Most of us thought the argument for the free market over the dead hand of state control had been so decisively won all those years ago that it was dead and buried. But Mr Corbyn’s popularity – especially with the young – shows it has to be won again.

Describing today’s Labour party as ‘a clear and present danger’ to our national well-being, he vowed: ‘We will take them on and we will defeat them.’

Can he please – like his colleague Boris Johnson – now show the same determination to achieve a clean and expeditious Brexit?
