Fiona: I didn’t fit in at Oxford
AS the presenter of Antiques Roadshow, Fiona Bruce is now firmly part of the establishment.
But the 53-year-old BBC star, right, has revealed her unhappiness at Oxford University, saying she struggled to fit in with the aristocrats who just ‘waltzed in’.
Miss Bruce, who went to school at a comprehensive in New Cross, south- east London, said: ‘I was chippy. I met someone with a title on my first day, Baronet von Something, and I thought, “Look at me, I’ve really grafted. Who are these people who have just waltzed into Oxford? I don’t want to hang out with those people. They’re nothing like me”.’
Miss Bruce, who earns between £350,000 to £399,999 a year, also told Radio Times she was ‘disappointed’ when she learned of the gender pay gap at the BBC, adding: ‘The BBC is trying to get its house in order. Let’s see what comes out’.
