Sir Chris Bonington’s mountaineering days may be over, but the 83-year-old refuses to hang up his climbing boots. The first Briton to scale the North face of the Eiger, he can now be found scrambling up the climbing wall at the Westway sports centre under the A40 flyover in London. ‘I hate the gym, but I still love climbing,’ he confides. ‘I go two or three times a week.’
