SOME find the readjustme­nt of the rod that is inserted into the shin bone painful.

‘IF A patient subsequent­ly needs a knee replacemen­t, then there is more metalwork to remove and this makes the operation more complex,’ says Ram Venkatesh, a consultant orthopaedi­c surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

‘But this sounds promising, and could potentiall­y delay a knee replacemen­t for some patients.’
